Karachi, March 13 2018: “Pakistan is projected to be the fastest-growing economy in the next five to ten years”, said Governor Sindh, Mohammad Zubair.
In a session held at the Karachi School of Business & Leadership (KSBL), the Honorable Governor of Sindh Mohammad Zubair presented on ‘The Improved Security Situation of Karachi and its Impact on Business & Investment’. This talk was organized as part of the school’s Eminent Speaker Series.
While addressing the audience, the Governor spoke of how the security situation in Karachi has transformed remarkably, such that peace has been restored and investors are happily returning. The economic turnaround we have witnessed recently was thought impossible just a few years ago when Karachi, which is and remains the financial hub of the country, was practically paralyzed for close to two decades.
Speaking of the current law and order situation and growth prospects, he assured that the law enforcement effort has been successful. Alongside, the launch of an ‘economic initiative’ in 2016, with the consensus of all major stakeholders: political affiliates, business community, law enforcement agencies, will bring Karachi back to its long-standing prominence as the financial hub of Pakistan. All macroeconomic indicators have been performing far better than before.
Commenting on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, he stated how CPEC had opened up the opportunity for Pakistan to fix its infrastructure. Such that we are now competing with other countries in the region, specially considering that “no global company in the world can ignore a market the size of Karachi”, given its large educated middle-class and the potential that comes with it.
Addressing the youngsters in the audience, and in a message to the youth of Pakistan, Governor Zubair encouraged them to feel confident about the future of Pakistan, since we are now positively safely coming out of some of the worst times the country has seen in its history, with all signs toward solid upward growth.
Dr. Zeeshan Ahmed (Rector & Dean KSBL), while moderating the session, echoed the sentiment that the safety index in Karachi has improved tremendously. Citizens’ focus has finally moved away from a perpetual security concern to more regular woes of traffic and waste management. He spoke of how business schools play a central role in sending out leaders that are able to contribute positively and shape the decision-making establishment of the future.
Mr. Muneer Kamal (CEO Karachi Education Initiative & CEO Pakistan Stock Exchange) presented a memento of appreciation to the Governor on this occasion.
The session brought together some of the city’s top leadership from industry and political establishment, to help them understand context of the way forward for Karachi and Pakistan in the near future. Students from other universities were especially invited to participate, to encourage knowledge-sharing and to give them the opportunity to gain closely from this pertinent current affairs conversation.
The KSBL Eminent Speaker Series aims to provide a platform of mutual learning by bringing together industry and academia leaders for scholarly discourse on topics of collective interest or current policy trends, with professionals and students in attendance.
