KSBL conducted a seminar on “Storytelling and Organisations” on 5th December, 2013, at the KSBL Auditorium. The event was co-sponsored by National Foods Limited and Dawood Hercules Corporation Limited. KSBL launched this Seminar Series on Global and Pakistani Perspectives last year and the current one was fourth in the series. The objective of these seminars is to create synergies between theory and practice by discussing and debating with and learning from highly qualified and experienced professionals which includes:
Foreign faculty who share global best practices
KSBL faculty who bring in local relevance
Industry leaders who focus on practical application and help create linkages between the academia and the real world
In the current seminar on “Storytelling and Organisations”, Dr. Nelson Phillips, Professor of Strategy and Organizational Behaviour, Imperial College Business School, UK, in his key-note address highlighted how research in management examines the role and influence of stories in organisations and how stories are a central part of organisational life and provide meaning, context, and identity to organisational members. In his presentation, Prof. Phillips discussed the findings of this research and how understanding and effectively engaging in the creation and re-telling of organisational stories were a central concern of the successful manager.
Following this, Dr. Farzad Rafi Khan, Associate Professor of Strategy and Organization, KSBL, made a presentation on Storytelling Failures and Organizational Disasters. Dr. Khan in his talk highlighted how storytelling has played its role in organizational development from the Pakistani perspective. He did this in context of lessons learnt from the Sialkot Football Industry’s Child Labour Controversy. He elucidated how and why organizational interventions often back-fire, and how poorly constructed stories can contribute to that. Dr. Khan attempted to explore these issues and questions based on his research on the child labour controversy that had engulfed Pakistan’s football industry in the mid 1990s.
Later on there was a Panel Discussion moderated by Dr. Javed Ghani, Professor of Strategy and Marketing Research, KSBL. The panel included Mrs. Nilofer Saeed, Owner, The Hobnob Group; Mr. Sirajuddin Aziz, President and CEO, Habib Metro Bank and Mr. Abrar Hasan, Chief Executive Officer, National Foods Limited. During this discussion, they shared some stories from their business and how they helped them in decision making and gaining fruitful experiences. The event ended on tea and networking.
